East Texas Giving Day brings the region together to help support nonprofits

TYLER, Texas — A week after giving began, East Texas Giving Day has generated more than $50,000 in donations for participating nonprofits through the website, www.EastTexasGivingDay.org. Officially scheduled for Tuesday, April 26, 2022 from 6:00 a.m. to midnight, East Texas Giving Day is set to be another record breaking event.

“Last year’s Giving Day was a remarkable success in an incredibly uncertain environment,” said Kyle Penney, president of the East Texas Communities Foundation, which hosts East Texas Giving Day. “With nearly 300 nonprofits participating this year and incredible support from our media partners, we believe the nonprofit community will benefit greatly from the attention this event generates.”

The purpose of a region-wide giving day is to bring the region together in one day and one community, raising funds and awareness for East Texas nonprofits. The initiative, organized by the East Texas Communities Foundation (ETCF), offers citizens of the ETCF’s 32-county service area an easy platform to support the mission of local nonprofits.

“East Texas Giving Day provides a safe and secure opportunity for our community to help local charities regain financial support that was lost during the pandemic,” Penney said. “Many normal fundraising activities over the past two years have been canceled or postponed, leaving a huge funding gap in annual budgets. Giving Day is a virtual event and could greatly help nonprofits continue to provide their services”

One of the pillars of ETCF’s mission is to provide donors with simple ways to achieve their charitable goals. By offering an 18-hour online fundraising event, ETCF offers the public the opportunity to donate financially and volunteer to various nonprofit organizations through a convenient online platform.

“One of the most appealing things about Giving Day is its convenience,” Penney said. “Donors can access the donation portal from any Wi-Fi enabled device, including their smartphones.” Data collected in 2021 showed that more than half of all donations on the donation day platform were made on mobile devices.

Donors have the opportunity to join in the fun of giving by creating celebratory pages that benefit their favorite nonprofits. “Celebration Pages offer the public the opportunity to actively participate in the Giving Day experience,” Penney said. “If you’re passionate about a local charity, this is your chance to get involved. You can create a celebration page, set a fundraising goal, and share it with friends and family through social media, text, or email.

The deadline to create a Celebration Page is April 25, 2022. To create a Celebration Page, donors can select any participating nonprofit on www.EastTexasGivingDay.orgcreate a donor profile and answer a few simple questions.

Donors can double their gift by contributing to nonprofits that have secured their own matching funds. Several participating nonprofits secured a match for this year’s event. “Matching funds are a way for donors to put their money to work,” Penney said. “Currently there is over $450,000 in matching funds available on the Giving Day site.”

Upon departure, donors can also make an additional donation to the Community Cares Fund. Donations made to the Community Cares Fund will be divided equally among the nonprofit organizations that fundraise on the Giving Day site. “The Community Cares Fund functions as a bonus fund for nonprofit organizations,” Penney said. “Last year, donations to the fund reimbursed nonprofits about half of their initial registration fees.” The minimum donation that can be made to www.EastTexasGivingDay.org is $10. Ongoing updates on the event will be posted on the ETCF Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SimplifiedGiving and the foundation’s website www.etcf.org.
