Allnet.Italia and TECNEL support seamless maritime communications for SAIPEM with Spectralink solutions

Allnet.Italia and TECNEL Develop ATEX Compliant Maritime Communications for Energy and Utilities Leader SAIPEM

Casalecchio di Reno (BO), May 3, 2022 – Allnet.Italia, an independent distributor with high added value and TECNEL, a leading company in the integration of wireless solutions and advanced systems for mobile alarm reporting, have developed an ad hoc solution for reliable maritime communications, safe and efficient systems based on Spectralink technology for SAIPEM, a leading Italian multinational oil company.

SAIPEM provides an advanced technology and engineering platform for the design, construction and operation of safe and sustainable infrastructure and complex factories. As part of its business, SAIPEM manages and transports fuels by sea through its state-of-the-art drilling, construction, heavy transport and pipelay naval fleet.

Due to the highly hazardous nature of the materials it handles, SAIPEM enlisted trusted partners TECNEL and Allnet.Italia to help equip eight of their main vessels with a communications system that would enable DECT voice communications reliable, transparent and crystalline without black spots between all those on board the ship. SAIPEM also had to ensure that the devices were ATEX certified so that there was no risk of ignition on board due to sparks inside the devices. Finally, SAIPEM was also looking to virtualize some of its servers in order to reduce the associated hardware and maintenance costs and to standardize DECT communications across the entire fleet.

Driven by Allnet.Italia’s distribution experience and TECNEL’s value-added systems design expertise, the partners identified Spectralink as the ideal enterprise solution provider for this complex environment. “We chose TECNEL’s Spectralink and Allnet.Italia based solution because it stood above the competition in terms of DECT experience and levels of support both before and after sales”, confirms Valeria Calvaruso, Head of operational connectivity in asset-based services. Ships Division at SAIPEM.

The deployment covers six physical Spectralink 6500 servers as well as two VIP Virtual Server One and 130 combo servers. TECNEL has also developed a box called “SRB-IP-ATEX” for DECT cells which allows their positioning in hazardous areas and complies with ATEX regulations. In addition, to ensure coverage throughout the ship, 300 Spectralink IP-DECT base stations have been provided.

“Spectralink is our go-to partner for DECT and we have integrated the protocol into our mobile alarm reporting systems,” explains Franco Boero, Product Marketing and Account Manager, “We were confident to deliver Spectralink handsets with their top notch because their enterprise-grade devices are best suited for harsh environments.

In addition to this, Spectralink DECT solutions provide additional benefits to the maritime environment, “Because licensed DECT frequencies change in different territories, vessels, traveling from waters under one jurisdiction to another may end up in an area where their DECT frequency is occupied: for example, in Europe a 1.8 GHz carrier frequency is used, while in the USA it is a 1.9 GHz carrier frequency. Spectralink DECT solutions, ships can switch DECT frequencies when changing territory and continue to use their DECT frequencies seamlessly while sailing,” adds Roberto Cherchi, Business Development Manager at Allnet.Italia.
